The importance of sleep

OPINION — Time, money and energy are the big three. Many people volunteer, donate and/or even work for a cause. However, in reality, there is a hidden gem that plays the biggest helping role in all that we do. It is so hidden that many people either cut it short or even do away with it altogether, and that is sleep.

As we are all inundated with health advice, sleeping seems to take it on the hip. However, current research tells a different story. Eating, moving, breathing and sleeping are the big four when it comes to life success. The tricky part is that modern life makes it hard to do them well. Just as you might have a yoga practice, you might like to practice all these, too.

Here is the trickiest part. The one that is the least visible is probably the most important, and that is sleep. Many people have all kinds of difficulties with it. However, there is one simple research-backed solution that people like — an early and consistent bedtime routine. Recommended is to pick the same time each day to take your mind off your daytime responsibilities and turn it towards a “fun and relaxing” wind-down routine. You can’t do much about day things at night, but you will be able to do everything about them in the morning. Should you wake up in the middle of the night, no worries. Return to your “more relaxing” thoughts.
