The ABCs of drowning prevention — 3 safety tips for Arizona families

Posted

Every year on July 25, World Drowning Prevention Day serves as a global reminder that drowning is silent, fast and preventable.

Recognized by the United Nations in 2021, this day calls on families, communities and leaders to take simple, proactive steps that save lives.

According to the World Health Organization, drowning has claimed more than 3 million lives in the past decade, mostly children and youth. Drowning prevention should start long before families head to the pool or beach; it begins with year-round education, consistent swim lessons and active adult supervision.

Below are simple water safety tips proven to help families prevent drowning incidents.

ABCs of water safety

1. Adult supervision: Designate an adult to actively watch children whenever they are in or near water.

2. Barriers: Use barriers, such as pool fencing, locked gates and doors to prevent unsupervised access to water.

3. Classes: Year-round swim instruction helps children build confidence and competence in the water.

Editor’s note: Founded in 1991, Mesa-based Aqua-Tots Swim School operates multiple locations throughout the Valley.
