Pinal County farms get creative amid water cuts

Recent cuts to CAP water alters way many farmers operate businesses

The family of third-generation farmer Paco Olletorn has a history when it comes to harvesting the land in Arizona.

Olletorn, 69, has grown everything from cotton and alfalfa to wheat and barley in the decades after his grandfather, Preston, started farming cotton sometime in the late 1920s near Kyrene and Baseline roads along the Tempe-Chandler border.

The Pinal County farmer has farmed himself since the early 1980s as he has leased 480 acres to grow crops. — one farm in the Maricopa Stanfield Irrigation District and one in the Hohokam Irrigation and Drainage District.
