Tempe’s iconic ‘A Mountain’ holds steadfast position in city’s future

Preservation efforts support historical significance

Tempe looks to preserve its natural attractions for future generations to enjoy, like Tempe Butte, which has continued to share connections with schools, cultures and other groups in the community.

Located partially on Arizona State University’s campus, A Mountain, known officially as Tempe Butte, has been a long-standing feature of the city’s natural landscape, holding importance throughout history from its significance to the Hohokam community to the athletic rivalry between ASU and the University of Arizona.

Historic Preservation Officer Zachary Lechner said that the history of the Butte dates back before Tempe was established, characterizing it as one of the city’s most recognizable features and primary symbols.
