Tempe speeds up funding to address homelessness

Regional plan also approved in Maricopa County

The Tempe City Council voted during its Dec. 9 meeting to accelerate the funding and implementation of new job positions and services to address the city’s growing homeless population.

The council unanimously approved a measure to adjust its budget mid-year by approximately $262,000 and accelerate a fiscal year 202223 budget request for more than $1 million to help people and families experiencing homelessness on Tempe streets.

The measure also included approval for six full-time benefi ted positions, and one parttime position with organizations such as Tempe Works, HOPE, adding a city housing specialist and expanding the city’s mental health response team.
