Tempe is being recognized as one of the most eco-friendly cities in the nation to rent an apartment, according to Apartment Guide.

Tempe came in at No. 6 on the “Greenest Cities in The U.S. For Renters” list, which is based on the rankings of communities that advertised green amenities like solar panels, EV charging stations, or smart thermostats.

Officials at the ranking site say they divide the number by the total count of properties in any given city and Tempe came in at 23.3% slating them in the top 10 nationally.

Apartment Guide Managing Editor, Brian Carberry, who put together the report believes the new trend of eco-friendly living is at the top of the list for potential renters.

“Eco-friendly lifestyles are becoming more of a popular thing for potential renters,” he said. “If you are a renter who really values where you live this is something that you are going to want to be aware of and this makes Tempe very favorable to them.”

Mr. Carberry says Tempe ‘green’ efforts are in-step in what is seeing emerge on a national level.

“It is clear that with this new trend cities all across the United States are making more of a conscious effort to live a green lifestyle,” he said. “I fully expect that 23.3% to continue to be on the rise for cities like Tempe.” Although there is some margin for error on a new list like this one, Mr. Carberry points out, Tempe municipal efforts are trending in a good direction to set themselves up for the future.

“Communities are starting to see this new trend of renters who care more about the environment around them,” he said. “It’s a trend that will continue to keep growing and for cities like Tempe who do this are starting to put their financial efforts towards it and will see the benefits.”
