Tempe police shot a person late Sunday night after the suspect rammed a car into police vehicles, authorities said.

At about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, police were notified about a stolen vehicle in the 1300 block of West Baseline Road in Tempe.

Police found the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in a parking lot.

During the stop, the driver of the vehicle fled, and the passenger remained but refused to comply with commands from officers, police said.

The passenger moved onto the driver’s seat and “rammed police vehicles that were on scene, placing officers in danger,” the Tempe Police Department stated in a release.

“Officers then engaged and shot the driver.”

Officers provided first aid to the driver who was taken to a hospital with a serious injury, police said.

No officers were injured.

An investigation continues as the suspect who fled has not been found, police said.
