Tempe residents are invited to participate in a live online forum this week where the four police chief candidates will appear and answer questions.

The forum will take place 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, via WebEx.

Visit tempe.gov/PoliceChief to send in a question and to get the link to the forum.

Questions can also be submitted by emailing hr@tempe.gov. Questioners should provide their names and whether their names can be read aloud with the  question during the forum. Questioners should include whether they live in Tempe.

To be considered for use during the Wednesday forum, submitted questions must be applicable to all candidates and must be submitted by 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, according to a city release.

Questions also can be posed during the forum using the chat function of WebEx.

Four finalists for chief were announced March 17. They are:

  • Kenneth McCoy, who retired in 2022 as chief of the Anchorage Police Department.
  • Josie Montenegro, who is serving as interim Tempe police chief and has worked in the department for 22 years.
  • Tom Van Dorn, retired commander from the Phoenix Police Department where he served 24 years.
  • Tom Worthy, police chief of the City of the Dalles Police Department in Oregon.

The webpage tempe.gov/PoliceChief features biography information about each candidate.

“Police department employees, city employees and business community members also will have opportunities to ask questions of the candidates during the extended, continuing interview process later this month,” city officials said in the release.

The search for a new chief began in February following former Chief Jeff Glover’s appointment by Gov. Katie Hobbs to serve as director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

According to the Tempe City Charter, the city manager has ultimate hiring authority for city employees, including hiring and management of the role of police chief.
