A 15-year-old Marcos de Niza High School student has been arrested for bringing a gun to school on Tuesday morning, Tempe Police said.

The arrest was made at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 19 at the school, 6000 S. Lakeshore Drive.

Marcos de Niza administrators and school security “learned of a troubling social media video depicting a student with a gun in a Marcos de Niza bathroom,” according to a release from the Tempe Police Department.

Police and school administration contacted a student who did not have a weapon in his possession and denied having any information regarding the video.

On Tuesday, according to authorities, the high school administration and police received information from a concerned adult, also regarding a student who posted a video with a gun in a Marcos De Niza bathroom.

After obtaining the video before classes on Tuesday, school security identified the student with the gun, police said, adding the student was confronted by authorities. The student ran into a nearby neighborhood.

Police have not confirmed if the video that Marcos De Niza administrators and campus security learned about earlier is related to or is the same video that administrators and authorities were provided Tuesday by the concerned adult.

Marcos de Niza High School was placed on lockdown from about 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. and, because of the proximity to the high school, Fees Middle School and Rover Elementary School also were placed on a brief lockdown, police said.

Tempe police established a perimeter and found the student who jumped several fences and was hiding in the backyard of a home, according to police.

A black handgun, like the one shown in the social media video, was also located in the backyard.

“I thank the students who stepped up to report this disturbing video rather than reposting it on social media,” Tempe Police Chief Ken McCoy said.

“I also thank our school resource officers and our ACTION team who worked with school administrators to quickly make an arrest in this case.”
