Tempe poet builds community through art, compassion

New book takes on mental illness, drug crisis

Art, mental health and the ongoing drug crisis collide in Arizona State University alum Austin Davis’ latest collection of poems where he explores his own struggles with mental health and his experiences working with unhoused people in the Valley.

As the founder of AZ Hugs for the Homeless, an Arizona Jews for Justice initiative that aims to spread dignity, respect and understanding to those experiencing homelessness, Davis is typically busy and on the move helping unhoused people find needed services.

A project he began working on during his college years, AZ Hugs for the Homeless continues to be a main focus for Davis. Aside from his work with that project, he is a poet who takes his work helping others and meshes it with his artistic abilities.
