Tempe officials remove graffiti from Hayden Flour Mill

Historic site is still in redevelopment negotiations

The city of Tempe worked carefully in recent months to remove graffiti from one of its most notable historic sites.

The Hayden Flour Mill was, until recently, covered with graffiti and vandalism. City officials contracted with Logan Simpson Design, an environmental consulting firm, to remove it in a way that wouldn’t damage the facade. All historic sites must follow guidelines set out by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Maria Laughner, Tempe’s deputy economic development director, asserted the century old site's importance to the city and its residents.
