The City of Tempe has renamed March 31 "Cesar Chavez Day" to "Women Farmworkers Day" following accusations of assault that came to light weeks ago.
As part of city employee contracts, Tempe once celebrated March 31 with a paid holiday recognizing Cesar Chavez and his work as a leader in the farmworkers movement. The holiday will still be a paid day off for employees, but will go under a different name.
“This is a council in a city that continues to stand with women, victims and survivors of sexual abuse. I really appreciate the fact that our staff came together so quickly and had a robust conversation on naming this day after women farmworkers," Mayor Corey Woods said at the end of the March 26 council meeting.
