Tempe mayor proclaims April to be Arbor Month

Posted

To reinforce the city’s commitment to increasing its tree canopy, and to bring more awareness to numerous benefits and values trees provide our community, Tempe Mayor Corey Woods has proclaimed April to be Arbor Month. Several tree-themed activities and plantings will take place throughout the month, according to a news release.

“Trees and green space provide important environmental, economic, and social health benefits to the community,” said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods in a statement. “Tempe is making huge strides to capture these benefits through the Urban Forest Master Plan and Climate Action Plan, both of which provide a clear path forward to reach the city’s tree canopy goals.”

Tempe has an aggressive goal to reach 25% citywide tree and shade canopy by 2040. The city currently has an 11.4% shade canopy and is working to encourage tree planting throughout the city on both public and private properties. City staff maintains more than 26,000 trees located on city property. The Cost Match Tree Program offers Tempe residents a 50% savings for purchasing qualifying trees.

Trees play a pivotal role in the health of the environment and community members. They help reduce pollution, sequester carbon, and slow down storm runoff which reduces soil erosion. They also provide much-needed shade during those hot summer days. Well-maintained trees and landscapes can increase property values, and the health benefits can improve air quality, reduce stress, and enhance community pride. Providing wildlife habitat in our urban areas is beneficial toward maintaining a sustainable ecosystem.

2022 marks the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day, which was started in 1872 by Nebraska newspaper editor and tree advocate J. Sterling Morton. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated worldwide.
