Tempe is conducting a water service line inventory project to protect the public from exposure to lead and copper in drinking water.
The effort continues in August and September in neighborhoods south of US 60, officials said in a release.
The inspections are performed outside and require the inspector to verify the service line material near a home’s water meter and the hose bib where water enters the home.
Property owners do not need to take any action, the release stated, but contractors may request that vehicles are moved.
The city is looking to identify if service lines are copper, plastic, galvanized or lead.
None of the lines examined so far contained lead, officials said.
The project is part of a nationwide effort under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rules Revisions.
Tempe officials said the city has been monitoring lead and copper in homes in accordance with the rule sincetempe.gov/ServiceLine 1992, has been in compliance and has not exceeded the regulatory action levels for either lead or copper.
The results of Tempe’s water service line inventory will be publicly available after Oct. 16, 2024, on the project’s webpage at tempe.gov/ServiceLine.
