Tempe curbing traffic accidents with Vision Zero initiative

Tempe is part of a growing worldwide initiative called Vision Zero, which aims to zero out traffic fatalities and serious injury crashes through a combination of engineering, enforcement and education.

Kids are back in school and many make their way on foot or by bike, scooter or skateboard, and sometimes students are distracted or take a risk to cross a street to get where they are going, a city release stated.

As a driver, the city advises residents to be on guard for such moves by avoiding distractions and not exceeding speed limits to be better able to stop before a collision occurs.

The release also stated that Tempe Police Department wants to make it easier and more convenient for residents to file non-emergency police reports. Types of reports that can be filed online are theft, theft of bicycle and identity theft.

For bikers, the city recommends that riders register their bike for free as an added safety measure.

Tempe has also collected information to help parents and students get back into the school year. Go to www.tempe.gov/backtoschool to find the list.

In July, the city focused on exceeding the speed limit as one of the contributing factors to the severity of a traffic crash and heard back from several readers, the release explained.

A few of the suggestions received for additional areas for more safety corridors have been passed along to traffic engineering staff and police for consideration.

As a reminder, if you have concerns or complaints about traffic issues in your area, you can use the Neighborhood Traffic Concern online form to communicate with the city.
