Tempe Community Action Agency is giving the city of Tempe more than $61,000 for the city to continue to operate a heat relief center at Church of the Epiphany this summer.
With temperatures climbing to more than 110 degrees, those without access to shelter will be able to stay in air-conditioned areas and have access to water and bathrooms.
“This work is all being done under the umbrella of homeless prevention as we have seen many of our low-income families and seniors use hydration and cooling centers during the day to offset the cost of running their ACs. Thus allowing them to stay housed and alive,” Phillip Scharf, CEO of TCAA, said via email.
