Tempe commemorates Old Mill Avenue Bridge’s 90th anniversary

May 1 declared Ralph Hoffman Day

Tempe’s well-loved Mill Avenue Bridge celebrated its 90th anniversary on May 1 with a gathering at the Hayden House with city officials and the granddaughters of past state bridge engineer Ralph Hoffman to dedicate a plaque in remembrance of his work.

To mark this occasion, the city installed a plaque on the bridge to memorialize Hoffman’s contributions to the city's development and state at large with his engineering skills and designs.

Hoffman was the state bridge engineer from 1923 to 1954, having designed not only Old Mill Avenue Bridge but also the Navajo Bridge at Marble Canyon and the original Pinto Creek Bridge among many others.
