Tempe has announced that its solid waste services office will no long sell compost beginning in March.
Instead, the city has contracted with Gro-Well Brands in Phoenix to continue to provide discounted composting services for Tempe residents.
Tempe’s solid waste services operation is being relocated to the new Tempe Municipal Operations Center and, according to the city, it is not large enough to handle the compost component.
In addition, city officials said in a release that the move is the also the result of “increased operating costs and declining interest in the program.”
Gro-Well Brands is at 2807 S. 27th Ave., in Phoenix. Residents who want to purchase compost at a discounted rate can begin going there in March and need to show proof of residency in the form of a current utility bill and ID.
Tempe officials said the city remains committed to continuing green organics collection for reuse, and there will be no changes to residential curbside or bulk green organic collection services.
“Tempe’s City Council has set a goal to divert citywide landfill use by 20% by 2025,” said Aaron Rebmann, solid waste services field operations manager. “The approaching changes will not alter the city’s commitment to meet that goal.”
