Tempe celebrates upcoming renovations at Clark Park

Groundbreaking set for Friday, June 10

It has been 14 years since children have splashed in the pool at Clark Park but, thanks to new City of Tempe investments, the park will  undergo major renovations and reopen next summer.

The makeover of the 10-acre park, built in 1949, will  include a new community center and pool, renew the restrooms, community garden, playground and shaded ramada, and upgrade the baseball field and basketball court.

When completed, the Clark Park pool will be Tempe’s fourth public pool, according to Tempe officials.

The city invites the community to celebrate the project at a  groundbreaking 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the park, 1730 S. Roosevelt St.

Mayor Corey Woods and councilmembers will help kick off the project.

"Over the last several years, the City Council has been increasing reinvestments in parks, streets, golf courses and more. Known as Refresh Tempe, this initiative aims to add and maintain Tempe amenities and infrastructure in order to maintain and improve quality of life," the city stated in a release.

During construction, the Clark Park ballfield and dog park will remain open but may be inaccessible for short periods of time.

Community members have been meeting with city staff on Clark Park improvements since 2018 to help develop a preferred concept for Clark Park and its renovation and upgrades, the release stated. Community input included a survey of Holdeman Elementary School’s students on their ideas for playground equipment. Clark Park had a pool for many years until it was closed in 2008.

The design and construction team for Clark Park consists of Haydon Building Corp, project construction; Wood Patel, civil engineering; Holly Street Studio, architects; Dig Studios, landscape architects; and Aquatic Design, pool design.

Information about all park updates in the city is at tempe.gov/ParkUpdates.
