Two police officers were injured Wednesday afternoon at Tempe apartment complex where a fire set off “small explosions,” authorities said.
The officers had non-life-threatening injuries and six others, including five firefighters, were evaluated for smoke inhalation, according to the Tempe Fire Department.
First responders from Tempe, Phoenix, Guadalupe, Gilbert and Mesa responded to the fire at about 2 p.m. June 14 near Mill and Southern avenues.
They were met with “heavy fire from a second-floor apartment which quickly spread to multiple apartments,” Tempe fire officials said.
A few “small explosions” were reported, possibly caused by welding equipment, officials said.
After receiving addition information, crews were removed from the apartments for safety reasons and fought the blaze from outside.
Six apartments were directly affected by fire, and two units sustained smoke and water damage, firefighters said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Care 7 and Red Cross are assisting with residents displaced by the fire, according to the city.
