A 48-year-old man has been arrested after Tempe police say the SUV he was driving hit a teenage girl who was running Tuesday morning near Country Club Way and Broadway Road.
Vicente Diaz Castellanos has been charged with two counts of accidents involving death or physical injury. Police allege he did not immediately stop his car, nor did he remain at the scene of the collision, which occurred about 6:30 a.m. Dec. 3.
The 16-year-old girl was running against the light on Broadway Road and Country Club Road when she was struck by an SUV, which was traveling west on Broadway Road.
Callers to Tempe 911 said they believed a dark-colored SUV had hit the girl before fleeing the scene, according to a release from the Tempe Police Department.
Officers arrived and found the girl on the ground with critical injuries. She was taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition, police said.
Officers took witness statements and canvassed the area for video surveillance, while operators from the newly opened Real-Time Operations Center used traffic camera technology to help identify the vehicle, which turned out to be a white Honda Odyssey, according to the release.
Detectives found the SUV within less than eight hours, police said, and the driver was arrested.
