Taurasi leads Mercury over Sparks, becomes the first to score 9,000

Taurasi returns after missing 5 weeks from injury

Diana Taurasi was back on the court Sunday, leading the Mercury to an 88-79 win over a depleted Los Angeles Sparks at Phoenix Suns Arena and becoming the first WNBA player to reach 9,000 points.

Taurasi’s scored a game-high 25 points Sunday, in her first time playing after fracturing her sternum on May 21. She said it had been a long absence, but it was good to be back out there, winning. The team went 3-4 in Taurasi’s absence. Sunday’s win lifted the team back to .500 at 7-7. It was also only their second win in seven home games.

“This is what we’re going to do from here on out,” Taurasi said in an on-court interview immediately after the game. “We’re going to play for each other, we’re going to play for you guys and we’re going to make a run at this thing.”
