Taste of Japan heads to Phoenix for cultural weekend

Food, vendors coming to Heritage Square downtown

Posted

Taste of Japan heads to Phoenix for the first time, bringing the cultural experience and food extravaganza to downtown.

The weekend event arrives Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7-8, at Heritage Square, 113 N. 6th St. Saturday hours go from noon to 9 p.m., followed by Sunday hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Experience authentic Japanese food, drink, pop culture, anime, cosplay, entertainment, shopping and other activities at this family-friendly event open to residents looking to learn about the island nation’s culture.

Taste of Japan will feature a variety of delicious foods from various vendors and restaurants, from the traditional like ramen, yakitori and tokayaki, to an array of street foods right from the streets of Tokyo. Entertainment will include live music, Japanese drummers, martial artists, anime, and more.

Adults aged 21 and up can attend Yokocho Fest, where guests go on a full sake experience. Yokocho translates to “alleyway” and in Japan, these areas were traditional gathering places to share drinks, food and merriment with friends and community. This glimpse into the traditional Japanese drinking culture includes an opportunity for a VIP experience ticket, which will include premium sake tastings and more.

Taste of Japan is featuring a Tuna Cutting Show that will take place Saturday between 1 and 2 p.m. Fresh cut tuna and sushi is available from the vendor “Sushi Boy” in the Yokocho area.

Heritage Square dates back to the late 1800s, and includes the restored Rosson House Museum, a jewel in downtown Phoenix.

One day admission tickets are $15, and the two-day price is $25. The VIP gold package is $69.
