Tariffs slapped on the semiconductor industry could crimp expansion plans at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in north Phoenix, according to a letter from the company to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The letter is a response to an April 15 request for public comment by the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security about helping “determine the effects on the national security of imports of semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing equipment” and its derivative products, the Regulations.gov website stated.
“Simply put, U.S. security interests are served by measures that facilitate the speedy advancement of semiconductor manufacturing projects already underway and are diminished by measures that delay, impede, or impair such projects,” the TSMC Arizona letter said. “For example, imposing tariffs on (semiconductor) imports will result in higher project costs and could delay progress. Or, in some instances endanger the commercial viability of many announced projects and those still under consideration.”
