A man was hospitalized in “extremely critical” condition Saturday after the pickup truck he was driving collided with an SUV near 47^th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, police said.

The crash occurred about 2:50 a.m. March 29. Phoenix police officers arrived at the scene to find fire department personnel treating the man and a woman who drove the SUV. Both were taken to a hospital. The woman had a non-life-threatening injury.

Preliminary information suggests both vehicles were heading west on Thunderbird Road when the pickup rear-ended the SUV, causing both vehicles to go off the roadway, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

The pickup struck a traffic pole, and the SUV rolled over.

The investigation remains active as detectives continue to process the evidence, police said.
