Sustainable energy solutions: Nuclear remains a staple energy source for Arizona

Energy experts believe among other renewables, nuclear is essential for a clean future

As utility companies shift toward renewable energy sources such as solar or wind, there continues to be a big spot where nuclear is holding ground for future power generation.

Arizona currently is home to the largest nuclear power plant in the country — the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station — located about 60 miles west of Phoenix. The plant, which features three reactors, was the last nuclear-powered facility completed in the country more than 35 years ago, until construction of a new plant in Georgia began about a decade ago.

Although nuclear is non-renewable, its power plants produce electricity with no carbon emissions. Because of this, nuclear energy has become one of the most popular and reliable energy sources used today.
