A man is now in jail after an officer-involved shooting in Goodyear.
No officers were shot or injured.
Just after midnight on Thursday, March 12, Goodyear officers responded to a suspicious activity call involving a male trying to enter a female victim’s apartment southwest of Dysart Road and Interstate 10.
According to court documents, the victim believed the person knocking on her door was her ex-boyfriend, Malaki Davrey Cox, who reportedly had a court order preventing him from going to the victim's residence.
Arriving officers contacted Mr. Cox, who then shoved an officer and fled on foot. During a foot pursuit, police said Mr. Cox displayed a gun.
Police said an officer perceived an immediate threat and fired their service weapon, striking the 23-year-old.
Mr. Cox was transported to a hospital and was reported in stable condition. He was expected to survive.
Police said the incident was isolated and there was no threat to the community due to the prior relationship between those involved.
Mr. Cox had been arrested in August 2019 following an investigation into a sexual assault in August 2018, according to court documents obtained last year.
According to MCSO records, Mr. Cox was booked into jail Tuesday, March 16 on charges of aggravated assault, prohibited possession, failure to comply and DUI.
