Suspects carjack vehicle in Phoenix, shoot victim in Glendale

Posted

An 18-year-old is facing a slew of charges following a carjacking in southeast Phoenix and a shooting in Glendale.

Roderick Jabri Smith, 18, was arrested Sunday on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft, fraud, escape, kidnapping, and weapons misconduct.

Early Sunday morning, a man was inside his vehicle outside an apartment complex near 44th Street and Baseline Road. At some point, a person wearing a ski mask knocked on the window and told the occupant that he was parked in the person's parking spot. The occupant pulled down his window, at which point the unknown person pointed a pistol at the victim’s head and ordered him to exit. Two other people joined the suspect and drove the victim to a bank, where he withdrew between $300 to $600 for the suspects, records state.

The suspects then drove to the area of 71st Avenue and Greenway Road, where the victim was told to exit the vehicle. While the victim was running from the vehicle, six to eight shots were fired. At least one bullet struck the victim in the lower back, records state. The suspects then fled in the vehicle, also taking the victim's wallet, phone, and bank cards.

The victim ran to a home and had the resident call police. The victim was transported to a Glendale hospital for emergency surgery, records state.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office got involved, tracking the victim’s vehicle to the area of 16th Street and Broadway Road. MCSO tried to contact the occupants, but they fled at a high rate of speed. The vehicle stopped  in the area south of Baseline Road and 20th Street, where the occupants were arrested without incident.

They were taken to MCSO's substation in Surprise, where deputies identified two of the suspects as juveniles. The adult male was identified as Roderick Smith.

Mr. Smith admitted to allegedly pointing the firearm at the victim and ordering him out of the vehicle at the apartment complex.

While at the Glendale location, Mr. Smith remained in the vehicle while the victim exited with the two juveniles. Mr. Smith recalled hearing gunshots and the two juveniles re-entering the vehicle.

Mr. Smith was jailed in lieu of a $75,000 bond with court dates Jan. 6 and 9.

The other two suspects were 16 and 17. They were booked into a juvenile detention on kidnapping, theft, aggravated assault, and armed robbery charges.
