Suspect killed after hours-long Glendale standoff with police

‘Tough day across the Valley’ for police includes another officer-involved shooting in Phoenix

Two unrelated incidents that seemingly started with domestic violence and escalated into two police officers being shot in two neighboring cities ended Thursday with tragedy in one and a suspect still at large in the other.

A member of Glendale’s SWAT team killed a suspect who first opened fire at officers around 2 p.m. after an hours-long standoff near the intersection of 61st and Alice avenues, just a couple blocks south of Glendale Community College. Police had responded after a 911 call for domestic violence came in at 2:15 a.m. accusing the suspect, in his late 20s but unidentified pending family notification, who, according to police, was in the neighborhood making threats with a gun. He briefly eluded law enforcement following a foot pursuit and then barricaded himself with his gun to his own head in a nearby camper.

Meanwhile, as that standoff was into its eighth hour, Phoenix police say they were responding to a domestic violence call after a woman ran to a gas station in the area of Cave Creek and Beardsley roads around 10:15 a.m.
