A 20-year-old man has been arrested after police said he assaulted three officers Saturday morning near 1st and Fillmore streets in Phoenix.

Police allege Bobby Freeman punched one officer in the face, hit and bit a second while a third was injured while trying to apprehend the suspect.

Officers were in the area about 10 a.m. May 18 when they saw Freeman and another person fighting, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.

Officers tried to intervene, and Freeman ran away, police said, adding that they learned the suspect might have a knife.

“A Phoenix police commander and two lieutenants located Freeman running from the area. Freeman was given commands to stop and surrender but did not,” the release stated.

Freeman punched the commander in the face and bit him in the forearm, police said. Freeman also punched one lieutenant in the face, and the other lieutenant suffered minor abrasions, according to authorities.

“The incident occurred in close proximity to a lawful demonstration taking place in downtown Phoenix,” the release stated.

“At this time, it is not believed that this incident is related to the demonstration. The First Amendment gathering came to a peaceful and natural conclusion.”
