Suspect injured as Mesa police pursuit ends in Tempe

A 21-year-old man has been hospitalized following a Mesa police pursuit that extended into Tempe and ended with two collisions, authorities said.

Mesa police officers were dispatched about 11 p.m. Sept. 30 to a house in the 2000 block of South Paseo Loma Circle where there were reports of a fight and indications that one person had a gun, according to a release.

As officers were driving to the home, multiple people called to report shots had been fired and that the shooter left in a dark-colored vehicle.

Officers said they found the suspected vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the driver did not stop and a pursuit moved into Tempe where the suspect’s vehicle crashed near Baseline Road and McClintock Drive.

The suspect got out and ran west along Baseline, police said.

“Officers tried to catch up to the suspect by driving the same direction when all of a sudden, the suspect turned and began running east toward officers,” the release stated.

“One officer stopped his vehicle and attempted to tase the suspect as he ran past him, but was unsuccessful in making contact.”

Police said another officer used his patrol vehicle to hit the suspect after seeing him reach for his waistband. The vehicle then collided with a tree.

The suspect was treated for injuries and taken to a hospital.

He is listed in stable condition and when released, he will be booked into jail on multiple felony charges, police said.

No officers or others were injured.
