The suspect involved in an officer-involved-shooting in Glendale in the early morning hours of Nov. 3 has died.

A man shot by Glendale Police during a confrontation Wednesday has died from his injuries.

Glendale Police identify Jose Enrique Cortez, 26, as the suspect involved in the shooting.

According to police, officers responded to a call for service near 62nd Avenue and McLellan Road just after midnight on Wednesday. The call information said there was a male in the road yelling and banging on vehicles. An officer arrived and located Cortez, who was standing beside a vehicle in the middle of the street.

Police say Cortez entered the vehicle and started to drive forward in the officer’s direction. He allegedly swerved into the side of the officer’s fully marked patrol vehicle and sideswiped it, according to investigators.

Cortez continued driving away when another officer located him. He eventually stopped on Ocotillo Road just east of 62nd Avenue, and police say he got out of the vehicle and started yelling at the officer and waving his arms before fleeing on foot.

Officers found Cortez on 62nd Avenue in front of a home. As an officer confronted Cortez, he allegedly started yelling “shoot me,” according to police.

Cortez allegedly moved toward the officer in an aggressive manner as the second officer deployed a Taser, which was not effective. Cortez allegedly charged the first officer while blading his left side forward and making furtive movements to the small of his back as if he had a gun in his rear waistband. The second officer perceived this as an imminent threat and fired his weapon, striking Cortez.

Cortez was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. No weapon was located. Cortez had an outstanding felony warrant for a parole violation stemming from a kidnapping charge.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in this situation.

The investigation is ongoing.
