A 36-year old man has been identified as part of an officer-involved shooting Sunday in west Phoenix, Phoenix Police said Tuesday in a release.
Officers responded to a report of a fight near 43rd Avenue and Medlock Drive about 6:11 a.m. March. When they arrived, they found an adult woman and a young child in the backyard of an apartment behind a locked wrought‑iron gate, according to a release.
The woman told officers the man, who has been identified as Justin Carl Schmidt, was armed inside the apartment. Officers used a Halligan tool to open the gate and safely remove her and the child, according to a release.
