COLD CASE
Suspect identified in 38-year-old Valley kidnapping, sexual assault

INDEPENDENT NEWSMEDIA
A Texas man has been arrested in a 1986 sexual assault and kidnapping case, Phoenix police said.
David Roy Mundt, 61, has been arrested and is in custody in Texas, awaiting extradition.
The case dates to July 6, 1986, when officers responded to the area of 10th Street and Coral Gables Drive after the parents of a toddler reported the kidnapping of their child. The parents told officers they woke up and realized that their home had been burglarized overnight and that their child was missing, according to a release from the Phoenix Police Department.
The child was found by neighbors and returned home not long after the call to police, the release stated.
Investigators’ efforts failed to produce a suspect.
On Oct. 28, 1992, a child in Henderson, Texas, was kidnapped and assaulted in a similar way to the Phoenix case. Evidence from the crime was entered into the Combined DNA Index System, but the suspect DNA did not match a known person.
The Phoenix case was assigned to Phoenix PD Cold Case Sex Crimes detectives, who submitted physical evidence and entered it into CODIS. The suspect’s profile from this evidence matched those from the Henderson, Texas, case, but again the DNA did not match a known person.
“In 2024, Phoenix cold case detectives again pushed this case forward, this time using Investigative Genetic Genealogy. This process produced a strong lead which was further investigated. Ultimately, this led to the suspect being identified as 61-year-old David Mundt,” the release stated.
Phoenix and Texas authorities worked together and Mundt was arrested. Phoenix detectives established probable cause for the case in Phoenix, police said.
Once extradition is worked out, Mundt will be transported to Phoenix to face the related charges, the release stated.
