The Scottsdale Unified School District could soon remove 16 books from its catalog for containing sexually explicit material and two more titles are likely to go on a list of books that can only be checked out with parental permission.
A 15-person committee of district staff employees led by district director of teaching and learning Dr. Kimberly Dodds Keran have reviewed the books and are recommending to superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel the books be either removed from shelves or require parental permission before being checked out.
The move comes after Jill Dunican, a local mother with two high school students, asked for the books to be removed back on July 31, 2024.
