Surprise's annual event offers a safe lead up to Halloween night

Hundreds of people attended the city of Surprise G.A.I.N. — Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods — event for a safe place to trick-or-treat and meet their local public safety workers.

Many wore Halloween costumes to the family-friendly and interactive community activity held for three hours on Oct. 21 at Mark Coronado Park, 15960 N. Bullard Ave. The Surprise Police and Fire-Medical departments hosted the G.A.I.N. community celebration, highlighting the importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement.

G.A.I.N., a day to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity, initially started in 1998 as “Arizona’s cooler weather alternative to National Night Out,” which is held in August when the summer heat would be too intense, according to published reports.
