A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot Thursday as Surprise Police are investigating the shooting after arresting the suspect.
Dariusz Modrzejewski, 48, was arrested and charged with three counts aggravated assault — one each of causing serious physical injury to another, use of a deadly weapon, and assaulting a minor under age 15 — according to the police.
Surprise Police and Fire-Medical personnel were responding to a home near 184th Drive and West Bell Road about 6:30 p.m. May 1 for a call of a man acting erratically. Dispatchers also received a 911 call from Modrzejewski, who made threatening statements about harming his family, according to police.
Crisis negotiators and SWAT worked for a resolution, but when police heard gunshots inside the home they entered and found the girl with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to an ambulance staged nearby and was listed in critical condition as of Friday evening, and Modrzejewski was taken into custody, police said.
