Surprise to lose millions in rental tax revenue

Surprise officials are bracing for the loss of a tax on apartment and home rentals.

Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill last week that repeals a tax on rentals that has been a key issue for Republicans in the Legislature for two sessions. It could take away more than $180 million a year in revenue that 91 cities and towns collect.

Surprise is expecting to collect a total of $15.7 million in revenue through the tax over the next three years before its eliminated in 2025.
