Surprise students take to streets to protest ICE actions

Hundreds risk discipline to exercise free speech rights

The ICE-related killings of two Minnesota protesters this month happened about 1,700 miles away from Surprise, but on Wednesday afternoon, the high-profile incidents received attention here in a mostly peaceful way.

A couple hundred students from both Shadow Ridge High School and Paradise Honors High School walked out of classes at 1:15 p.m. to caravan by foot to the Safeway shopping center at Cotton Lane and Peoria Avenue to express their anger over the ICE incidents.

“We did this because this is a cause that we are willing to fight for — and that we need to fight for — because ICE does not belong in our country,” Paradise Honors sophomore Violet Lucas said. “They are not saving anyone. They are murdering people.”
