Surprise resident arrested during speech to council

Massie removed after mayor accuses her of attacking city

A Surprise community activist who played a role in this year’s mayoral election was arrested and charged while speaking from the podium during the Aug. 20 city council meeting.

Rebekah Massie, whose confrontation over a campaign sign in March helped spark a censure of Councilmember Aly Cline, was escorted out of the meeting by police and arrested a couple minutes into her speech to council arguing against a salary increase for City Attorney Robert Wingo.

“I will be reviewing my legal options and see what they are,” Massie said this morning. “I’m physically sore over my entire body (from the arrest).”
