Surprise pushing drop-off recycling

City touts alternative until curbside options return

With curbside recycling on pause for about 80% of Surprise residents, Gus Pedroza is now their link between what gets recycled in the city and likely what doesn’t.

Mr. Pedroza, a solid waste inspector for the city of Surprise, spends three days of his week sorting through a collecting of recyclables that the city takes in at is Public Works North Yard at 17274 N. Litchfield Road, just north of Bell Road.

“We’ve been doing this for about six months now, so you learn when we have a rush of cars,” Mr. Pedroza said, noting the heavy traffic during early mornings and mid-afternoons, with lulls later in the morning.
