Surprise pushes for residential property cleanup

Proposed ordinance rankling rural residents

The Surprise City Council heard the city’s updated property maintenance ordinance proposal during its work session Feb. 1 and is expected to vote on the ordinance at its Feb. 15 meeting.

During her presentation community development assistant director Tiffany Copp, who leads the code enforcement division, explained concerns of residents who live in the city’s more rural properties north of the Sun Valley Parkway. She also explained why most of their concerns could not be addressed by the code.

Kenneth Patch said he knows he is a more extreme case, owning 30 acres north of Sun Valley Parkway and west of 219th Avenue with a tractor and large pieces of equipment. But he also believes the ordinance’s implications extend far beyond his rural neighborhood to anyone owning a larger desert property in the city.
