Surprise police arrest suspect in 1-year-old boy’s death

A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and other crimes in the death of 1-year-old boy, police said Sunday.

Roderick Begay was arrested on Sept. 2 after police and the Surprise Fire-Medical Department responded to a call at about 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

The 1-year-old was taken to a local hospital where “staff learned a narcotic was present in the child’s system,” according to a release.

Surprise police arrest suspect in 1-year-old boy’s death

A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and other crimes in the death of 1-year-old boy, police said Sunday.

Roderick Begay was arrested on Sept. 2 after police and the Surprise Fire-Medical Department responded to a call at about 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

The 1-year-old was taken to a local hospital where “staff learned a narcotic was present in the child’s system,” according to a release.

He died at 2 a.m. Sept. 3.

Surprise detectives discovered narcotics were present in the child’s home and booked Begay into Maricopa County jail, the release stated.

He has been charged with manslaughter, child abuse, endangerment and misconduct with weapons as a prohibited possessor, officials said.
