Surprise, northwest Valley at-risk teens get lifeline

County grant helps start therapy group closer to home

Teen mental health issues and substance abuse is getting a closer look in the northwest Valley thanks to a Maricopa County grant to Banner Health.

John Martinez is only 17 years old — but he’s already looking for a second chance.

The West Valley teen is like many other kids his age: He goes to school, plays video games and explores hobbies like making music through computer software.

But he also has a substance abuse problem.
