Surprise mayor says ICE facility to open by summer

Detention center will process 250 people weekly

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Surprise will open sometime before September. It will hold 250 people at a time. And the federal government plans to reimburse the city for the loss of tax money at the facility.

Those were some of the things the public learned on Monday when Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor addressed the media about the city’s March 18 meeting with officials from the Department of Homeland Security and ICE.

“We cannot stop the federal agency from purchasing land,” Sartor said. “We can work to mitigate their impact to Surprise.”
