Surprise, mayor, officer sued in Massie arrest

First Amendment group files lawsuit in U.S. District Court

Rebekah Massie’s high-profile arrest at a Surprise City Council meeting on Aug. 20 is officially headed to the legal system.

The city of Surprise, Mayor Skip Hall and police officer Steven Shernicoff are all listed as defendants in the case that First Amendment group FIRE filed in the U.S. District court of Arizona on Tuesday morning.

The Pennsylvania-based group FIRE, which stands for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expressions, is leading the lawsuit, contending that Massie’s First, Fourth and 14th Amendment rights were violated.
