A Surprise may was sentenced to life in prison plus 57 years in the death of his 3-year-old daughter from what officials said was abuse and malnutrition.
Carlos Tercero Cruz, 38, had been convicted on one count each of first-degree murder, child abuse and kidnapping, and three counts of child abuse, according to a release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Cruz was convicted by a jury in March.
The case stems from a May 2015 call when El Mirage Fire Department responded to a Surprise home regarding a nonresponsive 3-year old. Firefighters arrived to find the child was cold, pale and not breathing, according to the release.

The case stems from a May 2015 call when El Mirage Fire Department responded to a Surprise home regarding a nonresponsive 3-year old. Firefighters arrived to find the child was cold, pale and not breathing, according to the release.
The girl was pronounced dead at the hospital, where health care workers reported the victim had the lowest blood sugar level they could measure and weighed 16 pounds. Her body and head were covered in scars, open lesions, bruising, and swelling, according to the release.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner the girl’s cause of death was a combination of blunt force injuries, starvation, dehydration and meth toxicity. The child also had ligature marks on her ankles, and her bones were nearly translucent, a sign of prolonged malnutrition, according to the release.
Cruz initially told Surprise Police investigators the injuries were from multiple falls, but later admitting hitting the girl with a belt. Police also found a cell phone video of Cruz telling the girl’s mother to deny her food.
The mother, Rosemary Velazco, was sentenced to life in prison plus 59 years after pleading guilty to first-degree murder and other charges.
