The U.S. Attorney’s Office says a 37-year-old Surprise man was sentenced to 16 months in prison for his role in a sexual abuse case when he was a senior correctional officer.

US District Judge Diane J. Humetewa ordered the sentence on Wed. March 22.

The attorney’s office says Edward Mendoza pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a ward.

Authorities say he was a corrections officer at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Phoenix supervising the women’s camp when he had sex with an inmate for between Feb. 1 and April 2 in 2015.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the US Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, Denver office. The prosecution was handled by Gayle L. Helart, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
