Surprise man charged with murder in Phoenix stabbing

A Surprise man was arrested last month and charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a man he appeared to have been living with.

Jose Luis Vela, 39, was arrested Friday, Sept. 18 in Phoenix after an apparent knife fight the day before, according to witness testimony to Phoenix police. The other man in the fight, Troit Deboard, died with stab wounds to the neck and back.

Two witnesses at an apartment complex at 19th and Northern avenues in Phoenix told police Mr. Deboard, a resident of the complex, banged on their apartment door and then kicked it open, bleeding heavily from his stab wounds. The witnesses called police and gave him towels. Mr. Deboard was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived on scene. Other witnesses saw Mr. Vela bleeding from stab wounds, but say he told them not to call police.
