Surprise draws protestors but no new candidates for election

Incumbents unopposed despite year of controversy

Three incumbent Surprise city council members seeking reelection this year appear on the July 21 ballot without opposition, despite a year marked by public debate over issues including a proposed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility and Project Baccara, a proposed data center.

Councilmembers Nick Haney, Jack Hastings and Chris Judd are each running unopposed for new terms representing Districts 1, 5 and 6, respectively.

In District 6, Carrie Deakin is running as an official write-in candidate but does not appear on the ballot. All other write-in votes will not count.
